This initiative will allow private entities to contribute finances to the department's HERO program, a service dedicated to drivers in distress on the state's highways. In return for their donations, benefactors will have the opportunity to display their logos on the patrols' vehicles.
Known in parts of Texas as Highway Emergency Response Operator (HERO), this initiative has been crucial in offering support to motorists when a vehicle mishap strikes. The newly approved Acknowledgement Program, as reported by TxDOT, is designed to generate supplementary funds that could potentially extend the reach of these patrols into districts currently lacking such support.
Anchoring the HERO program's purpose is its wide array of services including tire changes, fuel delivery, and securing crash scenes in collaboration with first responders. For individuals like Amanda Florence, whose daughter was rescued by a HERO operator earlier this summer, the program not only offers practical aid but emotional support too. "He didn't make her feel bad for running out of gas," Florence told TxDOT. "He told her it was going to be OK and he was there to help her."
HERO operates free of charge to the motorists it aids, striving to mitigate the dangers of being stranded on the roadside. The program's efficacy isn't only in the realm of practical assistance but also in profound interventions that come unexpectedly. Mandi Hernandez, the San Antonio HERO program manager, recalls a critical save when she found a man slumped over his steering wheel. "What started as a routine call had transformed into a life-or-death situation," Hernandez recalled in a statement released by TxDOT. Her swift action secured the man's survival and punctuated the essential role these patrols serve in the community.
While the acknowledgment of donors through the placement of names and logos on patrol trucks may be a new addition, the underlying commitment of HERO to public service and safety remains unchanged. Each operator carries a personal anthology of being in the right place at the right moment, reinforcing their dedication to keeping the streets safe for all. "It’s these moments that affirm our commitment to keeping our city safe," Hernandez said.
