Drivers and pedestrians in New Orleans should brace for some inconvenience starting this Monday as lane closures are set to hit Poydras Street. The City of New Orleans has confirmed that starting September 23, at 7 am, there will be a lane closure in each direction on Poydras Street from South Liberty Street to LaSalle Street due to drainage repairs and other construction work, details released by the City of New Orleans website indicate.
The closures, handled by contractor Hard Rock Construction, LLC, aim to wrap up in two weeks. "During the closure, crews will perform drainage point repairs, restoration of ADA-compliant curb ramps in the median at Poydras and LaSalle Streets, and street restoration work at the intersection of Poydras and S. Liberty, where temporary asphalt was previously placed by DPW following SWBNO’s waterline repair," according to a statement obtained by the City of New Orleans announcement. Traffic signage and control measures will be in place, but commuters should plan for potential delays.
This is a slice of the larger Poydras Street Improvements Project that has been underway since May 20 and is expected to continue through the end of October. Those driving or walking in the area will see roadway removal and replacement, re-striping, sidewalk repairs, and installation of ADA-compliant ramps among other upgrades.
Further along Poydras Street, between Loyola Avenue and Convention Center Boulevard, additional improvements are ongoing with an expected October completion timeline, it seems the City of New Orleans efforts to revamp Poydras Street will be a multifaceted endeavor over the next few months. With improved accessibility and roadway conditions on the horizon, any current travel hassles may soon pay off.
