In a bizarre twist to a hit-and-run incident, a victim's phone led to the arrest of the driver responsible for the crash. According to the Washington County Sheriff's Office, the collision occurred last Friday at SW Farmington Road and SW 157th Place, involving a motorcycle and a Scion XB. The vehicle fled the scene after the crash, but not before the victim's phone, in a fateful accident, landed inside the fleeing car.
After the deputies responded to the scene of the crash at approximately 7:35 p.m., they discovered the motorcycle rider had sustained serious injuries. Fortunately, she was wearing a helmet which, according to deputies, likely saved her life. The Washington County Crash Analysis and Reconstruction Team (CART) took over the investigation, during which they learned from witnesses that a dark-colored Scion XB was the involved vehicle. The break in the case came when a family member of the injured rider noticed her phone was pinging over a mile away from the scene.
Taking initiative, the family member traced the phone's GPS signal to SW 170th Avenue and SW Vincent Street. There, they stumbled upon a Scion XB matching the description given by witnesses and with damage indicative of a recent crash. This evidence was quickly handed over to the authorities. Subsequent investigation found that during the crash, the victim’s phone had been thrown into the suspect vehicle, inadvertently guiding law enforcement to the perpetrator.
The sheriff’s office has confirmed that 27-year-old Julian Borjas-Diaz was behind the wheel of the Scion XB at the time. Having been identified as the hit-and-run driver, Borjas-Diaz was arrested and subsequently lodged in the Washington County Jail facing felony hit-and-run charges.
