Wabasha residents are being called out for a dangerous and unlawful trend that's been observed on the local streets. Drivers have been skirting around construction barricades, a maneuver that flouts both safety considerations and state law. In a public service announcement posted on their Facebook page, the Wabasha Police Department has underscored the gravity of the situation.
Indeed, according to the announcement, Minnesota State Statute 160.2715(a)(14) establishes a clear boundary for drivers: Proceed not over, through, nor around barricades or obstructions designed to close portions of highway from public travel. These constructions are there for a reason – to ensure the safety of travelers and workers alike. The post by the police department goes on to state, "While I have been issuing warnings thus far, this leniency will not continue for long." The message is unequivocal; the current forgivability will be short-lived.
The penalties for these violations go beyond mere fines or warnings; engaging in such acts could endanger lives, including those of the construction workers and other motorists.
The Wabasha Police are urging community members and visitors to heed traffic control measures and follow posted detours with earnestness. "Thank you for your cooperation," the department writes.
