A Washington D.C. man has been found guilty of aggravated assault while armed among other charges relating to a Columbia Heights neighborhood shooting on April 18, 2023. U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves announced the conviction of 49-year-old Adrian Lee, a jury having reached the verdict for the Gresham Place incident on September 24. Scheduled by The Honorable Judge Rainey Brandt, the sentencing is set for December 13, where Lee faces up to 38 years imprisonment, in a press release by the U.S. Attorney's Office.
As per the evidence presented by the government, an accident occurred when Lee's wife sideswiped the vehicle of the victims, who were then returning from anniversary celebrations. Following the altercation, Lee presented an expired insurance card, and as the victims called the insurance company, became visibly frustrated. Directed by Lee, his wife left the scene with their car. While Lee fled on foot, though the reason unknown, the victims inadvertently tracked him down with their Tesla's exterior video cameras, attempting to secure insurance details.
The subsequent moments led to violence on Gresham Place, NW—Lee's residence street—where he, holding a gun, confronted the victims when they turned onto it. According to evidence, Lee pointed the pistol at the female victim before shooting the male victim once in the torso. The victims' effort to record the initial incident inadvertently led them back into the path of the armed assailant. After the assault, Lee fled to Florida with his wife.
In March this year, after a year-long evasion, Lee was arrested by United States Marshals back in D.C., having gone to ground following the attack. The investigation led by the Metropolitan Police Department and prosecutors Assistant United States Attorneys Rashmika Nedungadi and Sara Matar, resulted in the charges that led to his recent conviction.
