Rashaad Malik McDowell, a 26-year-old resident of Washington, D.C., has been handed a sentence of 75 months in prison. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, his charges include narcotics trafficking, specifically fentanyl, and possessing a firearm to advance his drug trafficking operations. U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and James VanVliet, the ATF Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Washington Field Division, announced this sentence.
Documents submitted to the court revealed that on February 8, 2023, authorities carried out a search warrant at McDowell's Harvard Street NW home. During the search, they discovered a loaded Glock firearm and a magazine extended with 17 rounds tucked away in McDowell's sleeping quarters, together with sizable amounts of marijuana and cocaine. McDowell’s absence during the search did not deter his subsequent evasion from law enforcement. Despite this law enforcement's crackdown, McDowell continued to peddle drugs and manage firearms through the months following.
McDowell confessed to possessing the narcotics found in his bedroom and intended to distribute them, as outlined by his plea agreement on June 6, before U.S. District Judge Timothy J. Kelly. As part of his sentencing, Judge Kelly also mandated three years of supervised release following McDowell's prison term. Law enforcement efforts did not cease, resulting in a second raid on July 12, 2023, where they confiscated another stolen loaded Glock handgun and further seized fentanyl, marijuana, and the tools of the trade, a digital scale from McDowell’s residence.
Indicted on July 25, 2023, McDowell faced additional charges in a superseding indictment on September 7 of the same year. His plea of guilty to the charges of trafficking fentanyl and weapon possession in furtherance of said trafficking solidified his conviction. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives Washington Field Division investigated the case with help from a cohort of law enforcement agencies, including the Metropolitan Police Department, the United States Secret Service, and the U.S. Marshals Service.
