The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) of Washington D.C. has reported recovering 40 firearms in a single week, highlighting their ongoing fight against armed violence in the District. From September 9 to September 16, 2024, the MPD's patrol officers and specialized units collaborated to remove these illegal weapons from the streets, as outlined in a recent release on the department's official website.
Among these recoveries, a variety of firearms, including handguns, rifles, and assault rifles, have been confiscated across the city. Notably, arrests were made in instances such as the seizure of an Anderson AM-15 .223/.556 caliber assault rifle in the 2800 block of Robinson Place, Southeast, where 19-year-old Jamir Mekhi Harrison was charged with multiple offenses including Carrying a Pistol without a License and Possession of Unregistered Ammunition.
Working through intelligence-based policing methods, the MPD focuses on identifying and intercepting those involved in armed criminal activity. While the list provided by the MPD is not exhaustive, it paints a picture of the types of weapons being concealed within the urban fabric. Firearms ranging from a Winchester 94 30-30 caliber rifle to 9mm caliber "Ghost Guns" were listed among the recoveries in a detailed inventory posted on the MPD's website.
While the recovery efforts stem from coordinated efforts across MPD's units, the police department also stressed the essential role of tips from community members. They offered up to $2,500 for tips leading to arrests and seizures of illegal firearms through their anonymous tip line and text message service. According to the MPD, the objective of these efforts is to "reduce crime and the fear of crime" by continuing to proactively remove illegal firearms.
