Visitors of White Sands National Park might need to dig a little deeper into their pockets come Summer 2025, as the National Park Service is considering a fee hike for some of its popular amenities including ranger-guided hikes and a new evening program. As part of its vow to elevate the visitor experience, the proposed increases would affect both the Moonlight Hike and the Lake Lucero Tour, bumping the cost for adults from $8 to $10 and for youth from $4 to $5, as outlined by the park in a recent press release.
The changes do not stop there, the introduction of a Starry Night Astronomy Program priced at $10 for adults and $5 for youths is also on the table, set to provide guests with guided stargazing opportunities, in a park beloved for its pristine celestial views, yet the proposed amenity fee ensures proper staffing and resources needed to offer a safe and positive visitor experience, which includes visitor and staff safety especially as these programs extend beyond the normal park hours, the NPS explains.
In alignment with the Federal Lands and Recreation Enhancement Act (FLREA), which allows national parks to collect and retain revenue from entrance and amenity fees, White Sands will be funneling 80% of the collected charges back into enhancing the very amenities visitors enjoy, with the remaining 20% being used agency-wide. According to the National Park Service, the revenue would specifically aid in continuing to provide a high-quality experience and promote visitor and employee well-being, as well as cover site improvements.
The public has been invited to voice their opinions on the fee modifications, with the comment period lasting from September 9 to October 24. Park officials are actively seeking thoughts, concerns, and suggestions through the NPS Planning, Environment, and Public Comment website, or via mail to the Superintendent of White Sands, comments the park considers crucial, as they will play a significant role in the decision-making process behind the implementation of the fee changes.
