Winder, a community united in collective mourning, laid Christian Angulo to rest following the Apalachee High School shooting on September 4, 2024. Angulo, a 14-year-old victim, was remembered during a funeral service held at 11 a.m. at Saint Matthew Catholic Church on Wilkins Road. According to a report by FOX 5 Atlanta, the procession passed through downtown Winder, where residents gathered to show their support.
An outpouring of grief and remembrance has enveloped the community as friends and family publicly celebrate the life of a teen tragically taken too soon. Angulo's kind spirit and his ability to bring laughter into the lives of others were cut short, prompting a GoFundMe page to support his funeral expenses. "He was a very good kid, very sweet, and so caring," Angulo’s sister Lisette wrote on the fundraising platform—sentiments echoed across a community struck by loss. She further shared that Angulo "was so loved by many," in a statement obtained by 11Alive.
In the aftermath of the tragedy, security measures and gun control have been fiercely debated as authorities continue to unfold the steps leading up to the shooting, particularly focusing on how the shooter came to possess the automatic rifle used in the incident. There have been wide expressions of support for the victim's families, with both Governor Brian Kemp and President Joe Biden extending condolences. To provide comfort and support, the Barrow County School District has canceled classes and is offering crisis counseling for grieving students and staff, as reported by FOX 5 Atlanta.
