A disturbing incident erupted at a Taco Bell in Carson when a woman confronted and attacked a group of teenagers, an altercation that was captured in a viral video and led to her arrest for threatening with a weapon, according to NBC Los Angeles. The woman, whose identity has not been disclosed, was seen in the footage aggressively approaching the group of Carson High School students, leading to her pepper-spraying and striking at least one teen.
Amidst the chaos, which witnesses and victims claimed arose from a dispute over a boy that had been brewing for months, the woman, apparently the mother of one of the girls involved in the disagreement, arrived with the can of pepper spray already in hand, as CBS News Los Angeles reported, the altercation highlighted the unforeseen escalation that left several of the teenagers and anyone who tried to assist them suffering from pepper spray exposure, one girl remarked, "Everybody that tried to help us also got pepper-sprayed, everybody in there." Parents and students gathered for a press conference on Monday to discuss the incident, where the extent of injuries and the number of minors involved remained unclear.
Among the students affected was a basketball player who endured a serious sprain that could prove detrimental to her athletic future, "Now, I have a second-to-third-degree sprain, and I play basketball," Jayla Johnson, one of the assaulted students, told NBC Los Angeles. "This really hurts me. I am affected by not being able to play with my classmates."
The Carson community has reacted with outrage to the incident, and civil rights advocate Najee Ali, Director of Project Islamic Hope, condemned the woman's action, "No adult should ever harm a child and beat them and pepper spray them," he stated in an interview with FOX LA. The sheriff's department has since arrested the woman involved although the specific charges have not been detailed aside from the allegation of threats with a deadly weapon, parents and activists are demanding that the woman be held fully responsible for the assault against the children.
