A Pavilions grocery worker was stabbed in the lower back late Tuesday while hauling trash out to a rear parking lot in Sherman Oaks, and the attacker sped off before officers could catch him. The employee is expected to recover, according to police, but the attack has left a Ventura Boulevard shopping corridor already on edge over a string of recent crimes with one more reason to worry.
The stabbing happened around 11 p.m. Tuesday at the Pavilions store near Willis Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department, as reported by ABC7 Los Angeles. Police say the attacker followed the worker down an elevator as the employee carried garbage out for a routine overnight task, then stabbed him in the parking lot before fleeing in an unknown car. No details about a possible motive were available, and it remains unclear whether the confrontation was random or connected to a robbery or theft attempt, an open question investigators have not yet answered.

Video from the scene showed a large emergency response converge on the store: at least 12 LAPD officers and five Los Angeles Fire Department personnel worked to treat the injured employee and secure the lot, per the same MyNewsLA account. The Pavilions store falls under the jurisdiction of the LAPD's Van Nuys Community Police Station, which is commanded by Captain Christopher M. Zine, according to LAPD Online.
The store is operated under the Pavilions banner, one of the supermarket brands run by Albertsons Companies across hundreds of California locations alongside Vons and Safeway, according to the Valley News Group.

The attack lands squarely within the scope of California Senate Bill 553, which took effect in July 2024 and requires retail employers, including grocery stores, to maintain a written Workplace Violence Prevention Plan, log violent incidents, and train staff annually on safety hazards, according to the California Department of Industrial Relations’ Cal/OSHA division. Overnight trash duty in an unguarded rear lot is exactly the kind of task the law was designed to address.
Labor union UFCW Local 770, which represents Southern California grocery workers at Pavilions and Vons stores, has repeatedly pressed the California Occupational Safety and Health Standards Board for mandatory safety standards and employer-funded security guards to counter rising assaults on retail employees. Nationally, workplace violence affects nearly two million American workers a year, and workplace homicides rose almost 9% in 2022, according to U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and OSHA data.
Latest in a String of Sherman Oaks Safety Concerns
The stabbing adds to a run of unsettling incidents along the same stretch of Ventura Boulevard. Hoodline previously reported that a Sherman Oaks man was held up at gunpoint during a computer sale just days earlier, part of the backdrop that led Mayor Karen Bass to order a high-visibility LAPD patrol surge across the San Fernando Valley in April, deploying specialized units and mobile license-plate readers along the corridor. In May 2025, the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office and the LAPD’s Van Nuys Division had already flagged targeted operations against retail theft and commercial crime in the area.
No arrests have been announced, and the suspect’s identity and motive remain unknown. It is also not yet clear whether nearby business security footage has helped detectives trace the getaway vehicle.
