A high school football game at North College Hill was interrupted by gunfire for the second time this month, leading to the injury of a Woodward Career Technical High School student-athlete, according to WLWT.
The incident occurred Friday night, halting the game between North College Hill and Woodward with just minutes left in the first half. Shots were fired near the stadium behind North College Hill Elementary School, and per a report by WCPO, Superintendent Eugene Blalock Jr. confirmed the game's suspension, making it clear it would be the last game hosted by the stadium for the season. Blalock added that the community had come out in support of the student-athletes, stating, "And to have this happen again, second football game ... in a row in the community, we have to do a better job," which reflects the upheaval the violence has caused in the local -school athletics.
The nature of the student's injuries was unspecified, but the Cincinnati Public Schools district has issued a statement voicing its sorrow and proclaiming steadfast support for the student, their family, and the school community; "Cincinnati Public Schools recognizes this tragic event and our support remains with the student, their family, friends and school community," according to the district's announcement shared by FOX19.
The shooting came on the heels of a similar event on September 6, during a North College Hill game against Cincinnati Country Day, where approximately ten gunshots were fired near the stadium, fortunately resulting in no injuries but stirring an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty around local school events, which surged again when Miami Valley Christian Academy canceled their upcoming game at North College Hill. Another game was rescheduled from the evening to morning to step up safety precautions even though implemented measures such as metal detectors and restrictions on masks and outside bags failed to prevent another shooting.
As the community grapples with the reality of this violence, the impact extends beyond the field and into the homes and hearts of those connected to North College Hill, leaving a district and its leadership to reconcile the harsh contradiction between the safety they strive to ensure and the pervasive threat that appears to loom just beyond their control.
