Streets in Washington, D.C. will soon be reverberating with the energy of the 2024 Turkish Festival. Set to bring a splash of culture to the District on Sunday, October 20, the celebration will necessitate some traffic rearrangements that D.C. residents and visitors need to know about. According to a traffic advisory released by the Metropolitan Police Department, there will be parking restrictions and a series of street closures throughout the weekend.
Scheduled for a full day of festivities, the event will cause several streets to be declared off-limits for parking and closed to traffic from Saturday, October 19, at 10:00 p.m. until Sunday, October 20, at 11:00 p.m. The affected streets include 4th Street from Pennsylvania Avenue to Madison Drive, NW; Constitution Avenue from 6th Street to 3rd Street, NW; and Pennsylvania Avenue from 6th Street to 3rd Street, NW. Visitors and locals alike should prepare for a shift in their usual weekend whereabouts.
Seeking access to the heart of the district will still be possible, but only on a limited basis. Roads such as Constitution Avenue from 7th Street to 6th Street, NW, and Pennsylvania Avenue from 7th Street to 6th Street, NW will be open to local traffic exclusively from the beginning of the parking restrictions on Saturday evening until the end of the event on Sunday night. On the other hand, 6th Street from C Street to Constitution Avenue NW may also be closed for vehicle traffic on Sunday if public safety and traffic conditions make it necessary. Locals should keep abreast of the latest updates as changes can occur due to unforeseen circumstances.
Authorities are advising the public to pay attention to emergency no parking signage to avoid penalties. According to the MPD notice, "All vehicles that are parked in violation of the emergency no parking signs will be ticketed and towed." With increased pedestrian traffic expected near the festival area, drivers should exercise extra caution. Those planning to drive through the vicinity are encouraged to look for alternate routes to avoid delays.
