An incident that unfolded at the South Park Satellite Election Office has caught the public eye after a video surfaced online. Allegheny County Elections stated on Wednesday detailing the events that took place last Saturday, Oct. 26, where a group of voters required translators to assist them with mail-in ballot applications.
According to Allegheny County, the video in question shows a conversation between these voters, their translators, and a County employee. The employee is seen instructing that elderly and disabled individuals were permitted to sit while waiting to process their applications. The County has clarified that this has been a common courtesy extended to any elderly or disabled person voting at their Satellite Offices. Subsequently, the able-bodied individuals returned to the queue, while those with disabilities or needing translation assistance received the help they needed to navigate the voting process.
This clarification comes amid concerns about the integrity and accessibility of the voting process. The county's statement emphasized that the deadline to register to vote was October 21. It also highlighted that those applying for mail-in ballots over the weekend could only be accommodated if they had already completed their registration and reiterated the stipulation that only U.S. Citizens may register to vote.
