Two individuals were hospitalized following a kitchen fire in an Ann Arbor student apartment yesterday morning. The incident, which took place around 1:30 a.m. at a home on Monroe Street near Oakland Avenue, resulted in smoke inhalation for the hospitalized victims, with the Ann Arbor Fire Department quickly managing to extinguish the second-floor blaze, as reported by ClickOnDetroit.
The property, composed of several apartments within a three-story house, is owned by the University of Michigan, which is spearheading the investigation to determine the cause of the fire at this time. The fire was not believed to be intentional, and the damage was largely contained to the kitchen area with smoke affecting the rest of the building. The University of Michigan has not yet provided a statement regarding the status of the residence following the incident or the recovery of the victims.
In a social media statement from the City of Ann Arbor Fire Department, officials noted initial reports of multiple individuals trapped, but that "firefighters immediately searched the house and found no occupants." The post also issued reminders emphasizing the importance of functional smoke detectors in residences and the caution against cooking when tired, advice that, while it comes too late for this fire, might prevent future accidents.
