In a display of quick action and compassion, a Southern District police officer rescued an entangled deer in Annapolis' Peninsula Park earlier this week. The Anne Arundel County Police Department reported that Corporal Sears responded to a call about an injured animal on the morning of September 29 and found a buck in a bind.
On scene at Bay Ridge Road, acting on instinct, the buck's antlers were hopelessly snared in the mesh of a soccer net. Corporal Sears freed the large animal with careful hands and necessary shears after a tense few minutes. As described in a police press release, "The buck appeared unharmed and was safely released back into the surrounding area." The entire endeavor was caught on Sears' body-worn camera, underscoring the officer’s adeptness in a situation quite out of the ordinary policing playbook.
Thanks to Corporal Sears' decisive intervention, the deer avoided what could have been a severe injury or worse. The bodycam footage serves as a testament to the event, making it a clear-cut case of when policing goes right.
