Volunteers of the Anoka County Medlink Transportation Program were celebrated for their unwavering dedication at a luncheon on Oct. 8, hosted at the Kraus Hartig VFW in Spring Lake Park. According to Anoka County, these altruistic individuals logged an impressive 111,595 miles over 4,957 trips in the year ranging from September 1, 2023, to August 31. These trips, primarily for veterans heading to medical appointments, underscore a commitment that extends well beyond transportation.
Commendations came from Mike Gamache, the chair of the Anoka County Board of Commissioners. In praise for the program, he noted the drivers' meaningful service in a statement released by Anoka County, “The service they provide goes beyond just rides, though–– they oftentimes learn about the people they’re transporting and forge bonds that are lasting for both driver and passenger.” The efforts of these volunteer drivers amount to 6,403 hours, equivalent to more than 266 days, demonstrative of their dedication to the cause.
Diversity was not lacking in the appreciation expressed at the luncheon, with special accolades presented to two long-serving volunteers of the program. Laura Louis, with two decades under her belt, and Dianne Pederson, marking a full decade, were both recognized for their extended commitment to the transportation service.
The luncheon also shined a light on the top contributors among the volunteer force with Gene Hodel leading the charge, racking up 8,782 miles, dedicating 402.50 hours, and completing 264 trips over the past year. Bill Merry followed closely, with 8,706 miles, 398.25 hours, and 296 trips, while Don Manion totaled 6,037 miles, 352.25 hours, and 272 trips. They each exemplified an extraordinary commitment to providing transport for those in need to essential medical care facilities, an effort that resonated powerfully among their peers.
The collective efforts of Medlink volunteers remain a crucial pillar in Anoka County's commitment to ensuring accessibility to medical care, especially for those veterans who have served their country. As the miles accumulate and the trips count upward, this program and its drivers continue to make tangible differences in the lives of those they serve, mile by mile.
