Tensions continue to mount in the Antelope Valley community as the placement of Christopher Hubbart, known as the "Pillowcase Rapist," remains undecided. A hearing held on Tuesday did not result in a decision for Hubbart's exact location after his release, as reported by KTLA. Hubbart, now 74, was convicted of multiple rapes and sex crimes in Los Angeles and Santa Clara counties across several decades. Despite widespread objections, the legal proceedings are concentrated on his accommodation following his release from Coalinga State Hospital.
Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón expressed strong opposition to Hubbart's placement in the Antelope Valley, citing the area's history with the predator and concerns for community safety, as per the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office website. Gascón highlighted the "marginalized community" of Pearblossom, an unincorporated community in the Antelope Valley, as an unsuitable environment for Hubbart, and for the community's welfare.
Concerns were elevated by the logistical complications shared by Captain Richard Cartmill of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. In his testimony, he pointed out delayed response times due to the residence's remote location and difficult access, as covered by ABC7. The area is over 20 miles from the nearest sheriff's station, and the poor conditions of the roads leading to the residence would further slow emergency services.
Residents, who were not allowed to comment during Tuesday's hearing, expressed their outrage outside the courthouse, detailing their fears and frustration. "It’s terrifying, it’s scary, that he’s going to try to come into my house and rape me," Diane Swick, a resident who lives 300 feet from the proposed site, told KTLA.
The judge, aware of the more than 600 pages of comments opposing Hubbart's placement in the community, delayed the decision stating that Hubbart would not be "on his own" and will be placed under a "highly structured program" with a required GPS bracelet and subject to spot inspections, ABC7 noted.
