Arapahoe County is lighting up in green from November 4th through the 11th to honor veterans, an initiative dubbed 'Operation Green Light'. According to Arapahoe County, the event is a way to recognize the sacrifices veterans have made and to spread awareness about the resources available to help them and their families with the challenges they face after their service.
As Commissioner Bill Holen, an Army Vietnam veteran himself said, as per Arapahoe County, "Operation Green Light shines a light on the immense sacrifices our Veterans have made," and in a region home to over 42,500 veterans the county has already aided 579 claims in 2024, recovering nearly $9 million from the VA for service-connected disabilities, these gestures of support are more than symbolic, they act as beacons, guiding those in need to services available, in a system where assistance is not only warranted but due.
Holen reiterated the county's commitment to veteran assistance by highlighting the personal connection between the staff and clients, "Our Veteran Services Office is staffed by veterans for veterans,” he said in a statement that underscores the trust and camaraderie that propels the county's efforts. Free of charge, these offices assist veterans and their dependents in claiming state and federal benefits, a necessary task to bridge the gap between service and civilian life.
The public is encouraged to partake in 'Operation Green Light' by simply swapping one light bulb at their residence for green, a move that can stir conversation and demonstrate solidarity, businesses too can join in by illuminating their premises with green lights, lighting up neighborhoods in Arapahoe County, and sparking public participation which can extend beyond the Veterans Day holiday, into a year-round demonstration of support, residents can even take their participation online, using the hashtag #OperationGreenLight for a broader reach.
