In a stark demonstration of protest, an Arizona man, identified as Samuel Mena Jr., set himself on fire during a pro-Palestinian rally in Washington, D.C. Reports from both 12News and Arizona's Family indicate the incident occurred across the street from the White House, resulting in the man sustaining burns to his arms.
Officers from the Metropolitan police and bystanders were quick to extinguish the fire before Mena was whisked away to a hospital. The event was marked by its proximity to the one-year anniversary of the Hamas attack that led to war in Gaza. According to a WUSA report, Mena had previously been an employee, of Arizona's Family as a news photographer but was not on official assignment at the time of the incident.
Mena's motivations, later uncovered through posts on a website registered in his name, were part of a larger discourse shared on his personal social media. His account on the platform X, included pictures of Mena with a Palestinian flag and intentions to live-stream outside of the White House. Additionally, the website linked in his social media profile contained a detailed essay expounding on his reasons for the act of self-immolation.
The severity of the man's injuries, fortunately, has been described as non-life-threatening. Mena, a 2018 graduate of the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication, was recognized for his two years of service at Arizona's Family. However, the station stressed, "Arizona’s Family expects its newsroom employees to conduct themselves with neutrality and objectivity," and revealed that Mena is no longer an employee with the company, according to a statement by Arizona’s Family.
