Despite Texas seeing a 2.8% decrease in traffic fatalities in 2023, the risk of road accidents remains significant, with a person injured every two minutes and a reportable crash occurring every 56 seconds. The City has shown commitment toward a future that envisions zero crashes, injuries, and fatalities. Katie Mueller, senior program manager with the National Safety Council, commends these efforts, stating, "They have implemented evidence-based policies and comprehensive workplace safety programs." Shared by the City of Arlington's press release, Mueller believes that these strategies are not only saving lives but are also reinforcing that road safety is beneficial for both business and public wellness.
Arlington's strategic approach included the development of a new Traffic Management Center (TMC) to cope with the increased activity during events such as the World Series. With advanced software that connected approximately 60% of the city's 313 traffic signals, traffic engineers could monitor and adjust flow in real-time. This boosted the ability to expedite traffic and respond to incidents promptly, presenting Arlington as a model for others to emulate in traffic management and public safety coordination. The efforts of the city's police and fire departments were synchronized seamlessly, thanks to the TMC and its integrated technologies.
