The Buena Vista East community in Arlington has seen a recent spurt of beautification, thanks to a group of committed volunteers and city officials. Last Saturday, nearly 40 locals joined forces with the Neighborhood Enhancement Team (NET), rolling up their sleeves to rid the area of approximately 4.5 tons of waste, the bulk of a clean-up effort that has removed almost 161 tons of debris since 2019, according to the City of Arlington.

Led by NET senior Code Compliance officer Curtis Jones, the cleanup initiative is part of a broader, cost-free service to Arlington residents. "I'm passionate about this program because it allows the city to 'give back' to the residents of Arlington," Jones said, as per the City of Arlington. "This program provides resources and assistance, with no financial cost to the residents."

Practical help was not the only thing on offer during the event: a block party rounded off the cleanup, with about 55 attendees enjoying refreshments and grilled hot dogs alongside games. A spotlight on community spirit saw neighbors and volunteers bonding over the shared task of improving their surroundings. As Lynn Warters, a resident of East Mitchell Street, expressed to the City of Arlington, "I have lived in this home my whole life and have never seen the city do this. I love it and think it is wonderful!"

The event also featured a notable contribution from ‘The Retired Librarian,’ David Jackson, with Community Advocating for Prosperity and Opportunity (CAPO), who dispensed 142 free books to spur reading and education. Ms. Goodwin, on East Mitchell Street, recited her gratitude, "This service has been a Godsend,” she professed to the City of Arlington. "I am so thankful for the service and dedication to beautifying our city. Thank you so much!"
