The Athens-Clarke County Solid Waste Department recently earned the Spirit of Green Award for their Creative Reuse Programs. The award was presented at the Georgia SWANA/Georgia Recycling Coalition Conference in Jekyll Island, GA, recognizing the department's innovative approach to reducing waste, according to a press release on their official website.
The Teacher Reuse Store (TRS) is a standout aspect of the program, having been set up in 2005 to repurpose materials and support educators. Having diverted over 500 tons from landfills, it’s clear the program has successfully managed to meaningfully help the environment and also aid to more than 5,000 teachers with supplies "at no cost." The department's Repair Café initiative, on the other hand, has since 2014, notably served as a hub for community members to have to come together to repair items, ranging from clothes to electronics, instead of disposing of them.
Aside from these community-centric programs, the Creative Reuse Program also includes Zero Waste Kits, first introduced in 2011. These kits provide reusable materials for events, which have helped to reduce disposable item reliance and support event organizers' sustainability efforts.
With the accumulation of such efforts, the ACC Solid Waste Department's programs stand as a paradigm of combining community involvement with environmental awareness. They "reflect our commitment to innovative waste reduction strategies, community engagement, and sustainable practices," as the department describes it. The award signifies recognition for the department's dedication to these principles and is a testament to the continuous community and partner support that has made these programs feasible.
