The outcome of a scrutinized police shooting has rippled across Aurora as the District Attorney announces no charges will be pressed against SWAT officer Michael Dieck, who fatally shot Kilyn Lewis. According to Denver7, Lewis, a 37-year-old Black man, was under surveillance for an attempted first-degree murder warrant. The incident that led to his passing occurred when Lewis removed an object from his pocket during an arrest attempt, identified posthumously as a cell phone.
The shooting has starkly divided public opinion, with bodycam footage showing Lewis holding his phone and white tubes of fruit snacks as he raised them, moments before being shot once in the stomach, as reported by The Denver Post. Despite no criminal charges being filed against Officer Dieck, the local community grapples with a sense of outrage and a demand for answers.
This decision has stoked the fire of activism within the community. The Justice for Kilyn E. Lewis Action Team issued a strong statement, as obtained by KDVR, expressing their dissatisfaction and determination to pursue justice. "We are deeply disappointed and outraged," the action team stated, labeling the decision as "a grave injustice" and signaling a continued fight for accountability.
