As the Austin City Limits Music Festival kicks off for its second weekend at Zilker Park, the Austin Police Department is raising the alarm on a rising trend of phone thefts among the throngs of music enthusiasts. With reported thefts predominantly targeting mobile devices, it has become clear that festival-goers must stay vigilant to keep their valuables safe.
Last year, the police arrested a man with 35 newer-model cell phones valued up to $45,000, denoting an organized approach to these crimes. According to a CBS Austin report, during the first weekend of this year's ACL, there were 44 reports of theft, 42 of which were cell phones. Attendants must remain wary of the opportunistic thieves that lurk among the crowd, some using bags designed to block cell signals to better elude tracking.
Understanding the threat, some festival attendees have adapted their strategies to deter any potential pickpockets. "I always make sure I'm wearing stuff where I can feel if [my phone] is in my pocket-- and if I'm not confident in that, I put it in my fanny pack where it has a zipper so it's secure," Megan Gertz told CBS Austin.
Ahead of a festival, Austin police shared tips to help concertgoers protect themselves from becoming victims. Recommendations include avoiding placing phones in back pockets and ensuring backpacks or fanny packs are securely locked. In preparation for the event, police have reportedly been working for months, underscoring their commitment to public safety. "There will be uniformed police officers all around the festival. So if you see something suspicious, you're encouraged to say something," according to a video statement by the police on YouTube.
With enhanced awareness and vigilant personal measures, festival-goers can contribute to a safer environment while enjoying the music and festivities. Meanwhile, local law enforcement remains on high alert, ready to respond to any incidents and ensure a secure experience for all who attend the Austin City Limits Music Festival.
