Austin's police, fire, and EMS departments could soon be sharing a new headquarters, a move that city officials say will consolidate services and save taxpayer dollars. According to a report by KVUE, the city is finalizing the purchase of a property near Zilker Park in southwest Austin for $107.6 million, with renovations expected to cost an additional $13 million.
“The official term that gets used is that these buildings are suboptimal,” said Mayor Kirk Watson about the existing headquarters buildings. “Well, Kirk Watson would refer to them as crummy, pathetic and dirt sorry. They’re buildings that need to be replaced,” as stated by KXAN. The Austin City Council is slated to vote on the property deal on October 24.
Austin's Fire Department headquarters and Austin-Travis County EMS face their own sets of deficiencies, the former witnessing structural deficits like a faulty foundation and cracked walls, and the latter dealing with legacy issues from being housed in a former nursing home. EMS Chief Rob Luckritz, in a statement to KXAN, relayed the consolidation as a pathway to improved collaboration with the city's public safety partners.
