The City of Avondale recently inaugurated its new Public Safety Detention Center in a move to bolster community security and modernize its facilities, located at 50 N. Eliseo C. Felix, Jr. Way, the event featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony graced by Mayor Kenn Weise, Avondale City Council members, and other city leaders last Tuesday, Oct. 1.
Replacing the antiquated detention center previously nestled at 6th Street and Western in Old Town Avondale, the new $21.3 million structure spreads across 21,841 square feet and comes equipped with a dedicated police substation, staff offices, an area specialized for defensive tactics training and sufficient space for up to 34 detainees, according to details shared by the City of Avondale's official announcement.
With safety being a paramount concern, the facility incorporates cutting-edge design and technology to provide improved protection for both law enforcement personnel and detainees. Avondale Police Chief Memo Espinoza noted the significance of the facility in a statement obtained by the City of Avondale, saying, "This new detention center represents our ongoing commitment to enhancing public safety in Avondale. It provides us with advanced tools and resources to ensure the well-being of our officers and the security of those in our custody."
During the ceremony, Mayor Weise was quick to highlight the facility's importance, remarking that "The new Avondale Detention Center demonstrates our commitment to public safety and to equipping our officers with the resources they need.” Further lauding the project, James Murphy, CEO of the construction firm Willmeng, spoke highly of their collaboration with Avondale, saying, “Avondale has been a tremendous partner for the Willmeng team, and we are looking forward to seeing their resources continue to grow and make a difference in the community of Avondale," as mentioned on the City's website.
Also expressing pride in their contribution, Willmeng’s Senior Client Relations Manager, James Crean, commented to the City of Avondale, “To build projects for our public safety officials is especially gratifying for us,” emphasizing their honor in fulfilling such a vital service for the city and its protectors. Gerrald Adams, Director of Perlman Architects, echoed a similar sentiment, reinforcing the broader impact of the facility, not just as a functional building but as a symbol of positive change and support for both south Avondale residents and the officers serving from this new base. He said, "It truly will benefit the community for many years to come."
