Significant detours and parking restrictions are expected around Howard University today and tomorrow due to the annual Homecoming Celebration. Alumni and visitors are encouraged to plan alternative routes and check for updates on road closures and parking options to avoid congestion.
According to a statement from the Metropolitan Police Department, starting from midnight today through tomorrow night, sections of 6th Street, NW, Howard Place, NW, and other surrounding streets will be completely closed to traffic. This is to accommodate the Homecoming Yardfest, a central fixture of the weekend's festivities
Tomorrow will see even tighter restrictions around the campus. Road closures and Emergency No Parking zones will be in place from as early as 6:00 a.m. until just before midnight to provide a clear path for the Homecoming Football Game, Parade, and ongoing Yardfest activities. Key thoroughfares such as Georgia Avenue, Barry Place, and several connecting streets will be inaccessible for the duration of these events, with detailed information on closures available on the department's X feed.
Residents should be especially aware of 'local traffic only' designations in areas such as V Street, and Euclid Street. In what could be seen as a respite, however, the Howard University Hospital will remain accessible, with entry points clearly marked at Georgia Avenue and V Street, NW, or Georgia Avenue and Florida Avenue, NW.
For those parked on the streets around Howard University, heed the emergency no parking signs or risk tickets and towing. Increased foot traffic will also pose challenges for drivers; caution is urged by the Metropolitan Police Department and the D.C. Department of Transportation alike. Planning ahead and staying informed seems to be the best way to navigate this bustling Homecoming weekend, as per MPD's official website.
