Beyoncé and Vice President Kamala Harris teamed up at a Houston rally in an effort to drum up support ahead of a neck-and-neck presidential race, with Beyoncé endorsing Harris in a room of approximately 20,000 people at Shell Energy Stadium. "I’m not here as a celebrity. I’m not here as a politician. I'm here as a mother — a mother who cares deeply about the world my children and all of our children live in. A world where we have the freedom to control our bodies," Beyoncé stated at the rally, according to a report by The Texas Tribune. The event centered on abortion rights, with Harris emphasizing the stark contrast between her and Donald Trump on the issue.
Former President Trump, meanwhile, visited Austin to speak on border security and immigration, prior to which he made an appearance on the Joe Rogan podcast. Trump promised to start "the largest deportation program in history" should he win the office again. He also had some choice words about illegal immigration, stating, "Immediately upon taking office, I will launch the largest deportation program in history," as The Texas Tribune reported.
The dueling Texas events also provided a spotlight for the consequential Senate race between incumbent GOP Sen. Ted Cruz and Democratic challenger U.S. Rep. Colin Allred. While Harris threw her support behind Allred, Cruz received backing from Trump. According to The Texas Tribune, Cruz delightfully tied Allred to Harris, saying, "Colin Allred is Kamala Harris." In Austin, Trump briefly spotlighted Cruz, saying, "He’s got my complete and total endorsement."
Across town at a Harris rally, Beyoncé pushed for Vice President Kamala Harris's election as the country's first female president, saying, "Imagine our daughters growing up, seeing what's possible, with no ceilings, no limitations," as reported by UPI. The message was clear: women's reproductive rights and the shaping of the Supreme Court were at the forefront of the event's narrative.
As the campaigns entered their final stretch, the strategic choice by both candidates to campaign in Texas reflects the state’s political complexity and its potential to swing towards either party. Notably, Trump during his event at an Austin hangar promised "liberation day in America" come the general election, according to UPI, while Harris at the Houston rally framed the election as a referendum on Trump's Supreme Court appointments and their impact on abortion laws.
