A 21-year-old man was hospitalized Friday morning after losing control of his vehicle and rolling it near the intersection of North Loop 1604 West and West Bitters Road on San Antonio's North Side. San Antonio police responded to the crash around 8:30 a.m. in the 2300 block of North Loop 1604 West, where the driver struck a barrier before his car flipped.
According to KSAT, witnesses reported the man was driving at a high rate of speed before he lost control. Police said the driver was transported to a hospital, though the extent of his injuries remained unclear as of the report.
Third Severe Crash on the Corridor in Four Days
Friday's wreck marks the third severe or fatal crash reported along or near the Bitters Road corridor within a span of four days. Two days earlier, a fatal multi-vehicle crash shut down westbound Loop 1604 between Northwest Military Highway and Lockhill-Selma Road near Bitters Road after an SUV rear-ended a cement truck and caught fire, according to KENS 5's coverage of that incident, which Hoodline also reported in its story on the fiery Loop 1604 wreck. That crash backed up traffic to Bitters Road with delays approaching an hour.
The day before that, a driver was killed nearby on West Bitters Road near Blanco Road after a high-speed SUV hit a curb, went airborne, rolled, and crashed into parked vehicles before catching fire, the San Antonio Express-News reported. Hoodline covered that crash as well, detailing how a driver died in flames after San Antonio police investigated the pre-dawn single-vehicle wreck.
A Block With a History
The 2300 block of North Loop 1604 West has seen severe crashes before. In July 2021, a driver lost control of a vehicle carrying a family of four at the same location, sending it rolling multiple times and ejecting the driver, according to KSAT's reporting at the time. Emergency responders had to use the Jaws of Life to free a passenger trapped inside.
The stretch sits inside Segment 2 of the Texas Department of Transportation's $1.4 billion Loop 1604 North Expansion project, which is widening 23 miles of the beltway from four to ten lanes between SH 16 and I-35. TxDOT broke ground on the project in 2021 to relieve heavy congestion across North Bexar County, and construction along the corridor has continued to shift lane patterns in the years since.
Speed a Persistent Factor in Texas Crashes
Under Texas Transportation Code § 545.351, drivers are prohibited from operating a vehicle at a speed greater than is reasonable and prudent under existing road and traffic conditions, a statute officers frequently cite when investigating speed-involved collisions, according to the Beltz Law Group. Failure to control speed is treated as a primary traffic offense regardless of the posted limit.
Speed remains a leading factor in the state's most severe crashes. TxDOT records show 1,247 people were killed in speed-related crashes across Texas in 2025, accounting for roughly one-third of all traffic fatalities statewide, even as that figure fell 15 percent from the year before, per the San Antonio Report. The agency has since launched its annual Operation Slowdown campaign to target excessive speed on state highways.
Nationally, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has found that nearly 85 percent of all rollover-related fatalities occur in single-vehicle crashes, with more than 90 percent happening during routine driving maneuvers like driving straight or negotiating a curve. Researchers attribute most single-vehicle rollovers to driver behavior, including speed, inattention, or overcorrection, according to Resmini Law Offices.
Bexar County recorded 48,522 total motor vehicle collisions in 2024, resulting in 215 fatalities, 773 suspected serious injuries, and 7,023 suspected minor injuries, according to TxDOT crash data cited by J.A. Davis & Associates. The county routinely ranks among the top four in Texas for total traffic fatalities, even as statewide deaths fell more than 8 percent in 2025 to 3,809, continuing a downward trend from a 2021 peak.
SAPD has not released the driver's current medical status or said whether any traffic charges are being considered in Friday's crash. The cause of the rollover remains under investigation.
