The streets of downtown Ypsilanti carry a new silence after the closure of the local favorite, Bobcat Bonnie's. Following a series of unresolved disputes between the staff and management over working conditions, the popular eatery has ceased operations with no intent to reopen. Employees report issues ranging from bounced paychecks to a poor working environment, which led to plans to picket at the restaurant's headquarters in Ferndale starting today, as reported by ClickOnDetroit.
As per FOX 2 Detroit, former employees articulated their love for their jobs but underscored the difficulties that came to directly affect their livelihood. "We want to be paid when we’re supposed to be paid. We would like the work environment to be more dependable," one former employee conveyed. The abrupt closure left many anxious about how to meet their financial obligations, imploring management to "do the thing that’s right."
The decision to close follows a request for better conditions by the staff, including allegations of inappropriate behavior among management, inconsistent scheduling, and a lack of reliable pay. Aspiring to resolve these issues without escalation, the employees' attempts to engage in dialogue led to the shutdown of their establishment. "We originally didn’t really want to have to escalate to a picket or anything,” one employee not wanting to be named said, per ClickOnDetroit, “We just wanted to have a conversation about our grievances and demands and hope to get those resolved.”
Despite these claims, a spokesperson for Bobcat Bonnie's insists that reports of bounced checks are unfounded. The restaurant's public statement outlines its version of events. "Bobcat Bonnie’s takes staff complaints seriously. On October 7, a handful of Ypsilanti staff members came to the corporate office with complaints and demands about working conditions in a written statement. We spoke immediately with the individuals to address the issues," as cited by ClickOnDetroit report.
