In a series of incidents that underscore the precarious nature of online and seemingly innocuous relationships turning dangerous, Broken Arrow Police Department have responded with swift arrests in two separate kidnapping cases. One of the cases, as reported by OKC Fox, involved a truck driver arrested earlier this week after a victim managed to escape at a local Walmart.
Breaking free from an ordeal that spanned multiple states, the victim, who met the suspect Jerry Lee Newman in Kansas City, disclosed to Broken Arrow Police Department that the trip intended to quickly transverse state lines, became a theater for repeated unwanted sexual advances. The victim had tried to vehemently escape Newman's advances but found their attempts stifled by locked doors and verbal threats—a detail echoed in reports from FOX23.
The second kidnapping case, unrelated to Newman’s, involved Keith McCaslin who was arrested on allegations of kidnapping, domestic assault, sexual battery, and public intoxication. According to News9, the victim in this incident stated that McCaslin, a family friend, forcibly engaged in sexual activities against her will.
Ethan Hutchins, the Broken Arrow Police Department public information coordinator, noted in statement obtained by News9, "So unfortunately, these kinds of incidents happen in our community and also in any community, and our department is very focused on trying to investigate these incidents and bring these suspects into custody." He further highlighted the victims' prior acquaintance with their kidnappers, rendering the circumstances particularly unnerving. Broken Arrow Police Department wish to remind the public to utilize text-to-911 services available in surrounding areas if they find themselves unable to make a phone call during such distressing events.
