A Broken Bow woman has been sentenced to a four-year prison term for child abuse. Kaira Leigh Wilson, aged 35, faced a federal jury and was convicted for her crimes earlier this year. The details of the case, which originated from an incident in March 2020, were brought to light during the investigation conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Idabel Police Department, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma.

On March 12, 2020, emergency services received a distressing 911 call from Idabel where they found a six-month-old infant suffering acute respiratory failure. Despite the dire circumstances, medical responders managed to resuscitate and stabilize the young child, who had sustained injuries indicative of violent abuse. Further examinations revealed a subdural hematoma and significant retinal hemorrhages, with the infant ultimately losing vision in one eye. As per the investigation, according to U.S. Attorney's Office, Wilson was seen throwing the infant against a wall in the moments leading up to the 911 call.

The crime was committed within the territory of the Choctaw Nation Reservation, placing it under the jurisdiction of the Eastern District of Oklahoma. U.S. Attorney Christopher J. Wilson expressed his gratitude towards those who worked on the case, stating, "I commend the work of the first responders and medical staff in diagnosing and treating the defenseless victim and want to thank the investigators for tirelessly working to determine how the injuries were inflicted." He also praised the prosecutors for their handling of the trial and their support of the victim's family at sentencing, according to the same press release.

The hearing was led by Judge John C. Coughenour from the Western District of Washington, who was in Muskogee for the case. Wilson was sentenced to a term in prison that she cannot appeal. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Morgan Muzljakovich and Sarah McAmis represented the government. Wilson is now waiting to be moved to a federal prison to start her sentence.
