A Carmichael woman has been arrested on charges of animal cruelty after allegedly cutting her dog's throat and then placing it in a trash bin, the Sacramento County Sheriff's Office reported.
Deputies were called to an apartment complex on the 4000 block of Manzanita Avenue, late last night following a distressing find. A dog was discovered in a bin with a slash wound under its throat, the dog was still alive when rescued. According to the Sacramento County Sheriff’s Office Facebook post, the call came just before 9 PM on October 16.
Detectives identified 41-year-old Danielle Killian as the suspected perpetrator, quickly detaining her at her apartment within the same complex. Killian, who was responsible for two dogs and one cat, allegedly told officials that managing only one dog would simplify her life. Hence, she decided to harm one of the animals on October 14 and later disposed of it as if it were mere garbage on October 15.
Further investigation led the detectives, to a search warrant execution at Killian's apartment, where they reportedly found a knife they believe was used in the act. Following her arrest, she was taken to Sacramento County Main Jail but was released on her own recognizance by the courts shortly after. The Sheriff's Office expressed concerns for the well-being of the remaining animals in her care, especially since they could not locate her cat, and Killian disclosed a pattern of moving often.
The Sacramento County Animal Control is currently caring for the injured dog and has taken custody of the second dog. Anyone with additional information about this case or potential past incidents involving Killian is urged to contact the Sheriff’s Office at (916) 874-5115 or Sacramento Valley Crime Stoppers at (916) 443-HELP (4357).
