The City of Chandler is charting a course for its future, laying the groundwork with a recently approved contract aimed at revamping the city's General Plan and addressing its housing needs. On the table is a $525,000 agreement with Logan Simpson Design, Inc., a firm now tasked with the General Plan update that comes as a legislative mandate, with a decade-long refresh cycle.
A requirement set forth by state law, Chandler’s General Plan is due for its regular ten-year overhaul, having been last adopted in April 2016. As part of the agreement, Logan Simpson Design, Inc. will, not only revisit and rejuvenate the existing plan but also spearhead a comprehensive housing strategy, an effort that aligns with SB1162. This new law, inked by Governor Hobbs earlier in the year, binds cities to conduct and make public a housing needs assessment every five years.
According to the city's announcement, an inclusive approach is high on the agenda with the formation of a Resident Advisory Committee and a public participation plan. These efforts aim to galvanize resident and stakeholder engagement, ensuring broad community input forms the backbone of the forthcoming General Plan, which is slated for adoption by the City Council in the spring of 2026, ahead of an August 2026 ballot appearance.
Chandler's City Council has been proactively deliberating on these matters throughout the year including during a Council Retreat focused on the scope and schedule of the General Plan and a Neighborhoods Subcommittee meeting to brainstorm on amplifying housing availability. Also, a Work Study Session dedicated to hashing out details of new housing laws and strategies for diversifying the housing supply. The planned comprehensive housing plan is poised to be a focal topic in these discussions.
More details on how Chandler residents can get involved and contribute their thoughts will be forthcoming as the General Plan's development process unfolds.
