In what's emerging as a case that tugs at the heartstrings of animal lovers and advocates for the elderly, April McLaughlin, a woman previously arrested for animal abuse, now faces an array of fraud charges, according to the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.
McLaughlin, charged earlier this year with the mistreatment of multiple dogs, is alleged to have exploited both her nonprofit rescue organization and her elderly mother, all while claiming to support vulnerable animals; the Chandler Police delved into her affairs after rescuing several dogs from her home and soon uncovered her scheme involving fraudulently obtaining over $47,000 in cash and supplies, as per the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.
Furthermore, investigators have reason to believe McLaughlin misappropriated substantial amounts from her mother's bank account, totaling over $160,000, and incurred charges exceeding $20,000 on her mother's credit card—funds that were spent on various personal expenses, not excluding flights and dining out, the announcement by the Maricopa County Attorney's Office.
April McLaughlin is now indicted with an array of felonies, including Fraudulent Schemes and Artifices, Theft, Aggravated Taking the Identity of Another as well as Theft from a Vulnerable Adult, and other related charges she remains incarcerated awaiting the adjudication of these claims while the justice system reminds us that a criminal charge is but an accusation, and she should be considered innocent until proven guilty as such, her future now hangs in the balance as the legal process unfolds against her.
