Chatham County is taking steps to improve local outdoor amenities. The Chatham County Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department has acquired a 0.7-acre lot to expand South Bynum River Access Park in Pittsboro. This property was unclaimed after the last owner, Clifton Johnson, passed away, according to the Chatham County.
Since January, Mr. Johnson's heirs have come forward, and Chatham County leaders met with them to discuss a potential sale of the park. They aim to manage invasive species and improve access to a new piece of land. The goal is to address erosion and enhance the river experience for everyone.
Chatham County is planning improvements for its outdoor spaces. Tracy Burnett, head of the Chatham County Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources Department, said, “We are excited about this acquisition as it will expand our riverside park and is a part of the county’s plan to develop a trail network system.” Visitors can expect more nature in their outdoor activities and closer access to the upcoming Haw River State Trail. Parking for the park is available on the east bank of the river, across from the Old Bynum Bridge. While the Bynum Mill Access spot is being renovated, temporary parking is set up on Haw River Assembly property, as stated by the Chatham County.
