A taped-up sign on the door at 4421 Six Forks Road delivered the news to North Hills regulars this week: the Panera Bread that has anchored the Raleigh dining district for more than a decade is closing Tuesday. The handwritten notice read simply, this cafe is closing its doors, thanking customers for their support over the past 12 years.
The closure, first reported by the Raleigh News & Observer, leaves Panera with 27 remaining locations across the Triangle, including two nearby spots at 6201 Glenwood Avenue and 2410 Landmark Drive near Lake Boone Trail. Panera Bread has long been considered one of the Triangle's biggest sandwich chains, and its North Hills presence dates back roughly 12 years, according to the same report.
A District Already Reeling From Closures
The sandwich chain's exit adds to what the News & Observer describes as a string of recent restaurant closings in North Hills. Charlotte-based Foxcroft Food & Wine shuttered its wine bar at the same 4421 Six Forks Road address after only 19 months in business, according to Triangle Food Blog. That storefront had previously housed Midtown Grille for 17 years before it closed in September 2022.
North Hills also lost pan-Asian chain CO in June, which quietly shut down its 3,680-square-foot restaurant beneath the AC Hotel after eight years in business, as Hoodline previously reported. The News & Observer also notes that Chick-fil-A was temporarily shuttered in North Hills, part of the broader churn hitting the district, which functions as one of the region's major shopping, dining, and nightlife destinations.
A National Turnaround Strategy Behind the Exit
Panera's North Hills closure isn't happening in isolation. Fast Company reported that Panera Bread has shuttered at least two dozen bakery-cafes across multiple states since summer 2025 as part of its Panera Rise turnaround plan under CEO Paul Carbone, even as it opened 23 new locations earlier in the year. The strategy has also meant closing all nine of the company's remaining Fresh Dough Facilities nationwide by 2027, according to Restaurant Dive, as the chain shifts from on-site scratch baking to frozen par-baked products supplied by third-party producers.
Similar closures have surfaced elsewhere in the region. Hoodline previously reported that a Panera location near Mount Vernon closed with 20 workers left scrambling and no severance, underscoring that North Hills is not an outlier in the chain's broader restructuring.
Local Concepts Moving Into the Vacancies
Even as national chains retreat, homegrown Triangle brands are stepping into North Hills' prime retail spaces. Benchwarmers Bagels and Standard Beer + Food are both new restaurants opening in the district, according to the News & Observer, while Jubala plans to open a coffee shop there as well. Kane Realty Corporation confirmed in March that Jubala signed a lease for another North Hills location at 4114 Center at North Hills, expanding into the Main District after already operating a busy spot in the Park District, per Kane Realty Corporation.
The turnover comes as North Hills continues rapid redevelopment. The district is also undergoing redevelopment, including the developer's Tributary project. Kane Realty broke ground in January on Tributary, a 332-unit residential community with 6,000 square feet of retail, as part of a 28-acre expansion of the North Hills Innovation District, according to Raleigh Magazine.
What's Filling the Six Forks Corridor
Beyond the Innovation District, longtime local pizzeria Vic's Italian Restaurant & Pizzeria is preparing to open a new location along Six Forks Road, expanding beyond its existing City Market and Lake Boone Trail spots, as Hoodline reported. And Raleigh hospitality partners Patrick Shanahan and Robby Opperman are planning to open Little Saint Cocktail Co., North Hills' first dedicated standalone cocktail bar, in spring 2027 on the ground floor of St. Albans Lofts.
Together, the departures and arrivals paint a picture of a district in transition — one where a 12-year-old sandwich chain fixture is giving way to a new mix of local bagel shops, coffee brands, and nightlife concepts as Kane Realty pushes North Hills further into its next phase of growth.
