A man from Chesterfield Township is faced with a possible 20-year prison sentence following his arrest on charges of child pornography. Joshua Mathes, 43, was taken into custody by the Macomb County Sheriff’s Office after detectives found devices in his home linked to websites frequented by child predators. Several charges of aggravated possession of child sexually abusive material and using a computer to commit a crime were levied against Mathes.
In a press release from the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office, as reported by WWJ Newsradio, it is alleged that Mathes was involved in the receiving and sharing of child pornography via online message boards and websites between February 23 and February 27 this year. He faces multiple felony charges, which include three counts of aggravated possession of child sexually abusive material and three counts of using a computer to commit a crime. Each count carries a potential prison term of ten years.
Mathes was arraigned on these charges at the 42-2 New Baltimore District Court, where Magistrate Joseph Cozzolino set bond at $10,000 cash/surety, as mentioned by Macomb County. Conditions for his release include no internet access and no contact with anyone under 18. His next court appearance for a probable cause hearing is scheduled for November 6th.
In a statement regarding the case, Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido was quoted by WWJ Newsradio as saying, "The charges in this case reflect disturbing exploitation of vulnerable young children, and we are committed to pursuing justice for these children. We will work tirelessly to hold accountable those who use online platforms to perpetuate abuse and ensure a safer future for our children.” The Macomb County Prosecutor's Office reasserts its dedication to justice and to adhering to the laws of the State of Michigan, reminding the public that the accused are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
