Clark County has come to terms on a settlement connected to the deputy-involved shooting that occurred on October 29, 2020. The family of Kevin Peterson Jr., who was fatally shot by sheriff's deputies, will receive $1.25 million, as confirmed in a release from the county. The incident took place during a drug task force operation by the Clark-Vancouver Regional Drug Task Force, where Peterson, armed with a handgun, fled on foot and was subsequently shot after allegedly pointing his weapon at officers.
According to a statement obtained by the county's official website, an independent investigation was requested by Clark County Prosecuting Attorney Tony Golik, carried out by the Lower Columbia Major Crimes Team. Following the initial investigation, a secondary review was conducted by the Pierce County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office, determining the deputies' actions to be justified. The review cited, “There was no legal requirement for the officers to allow Mr. Peterson to fire first before defending themselves,” noting that the use of force was deemed necessary to prevent harm or death.
This decision has been backed by Clark County Sheriff John Horch, who expressed support for his deputies. "While the loss of life is always tragic, I fully support the actions of my deputies, who acted in accordance with their training and the law to protect themselves and our community," Horch said. "We will continue to focus on our mission to serve and protect. I stand firmly behind the men and women of the Clark County Sheriff's Office."
The settlement marks the beginning of closure for an event that has lingered over the community for years. Although the shooting was ruled lawful, the resolution of this lawsuit means to hopefully allow both the family of Kevin Peterson Jr. and the county to gradually move forward from the tragedy. Sheriff Horch emphasizes the importance of this progression, confirming the county's dedication to their duty: “We will continue to focus on our mission to serve and protect,” he reiterated in a statement.
