A life sentence has been laid upon Van Henry Brisbon, a 62-year-old man convicted of capital murder. Brisbon, who was accused of killing 16-year-old Lauren Juma, faced justice as Harris County District Attorney Kim Ogg described his actions as "senseless and horrific," according to a statement on the DA's office website. The haunting details of the case reveal a shattered domesticity, where Brisbon attempted to rape the teenage girl before taking her life.
Brisbon's relationship to the victim was marked by a sinister turn on the night of April 29, 2022. A Harris County jury heard testimonies and reviewed evidence, rendering the verdict that sealed Brisbon's fate to life without the possibility of parole. In the harrowing moments leading up to her death, Lauren had been alone with Brisbon and reached out to her mother and sister via FaceTime, alerting them to Brisbon's "weird" behavior, information derived from the same DA's office report.
As disclosed during the trial, law enforcement officials arrived at the scene to the sounds of gunshots within the house. Upon their entry, they discovered Lauren's life had been ended with a 9mm handgun, which was found at the location. The collected evidence not only pointed to murder but also to Brisbon's intent to commit sexual assault against the teenager. In her statements, Assistant District Attorney Katie Warren addressed the difficulty of the trial, the irrefutable evidence, and the emotion-charged courtroom atmosphere, stating, "Our jury heard bodycam recordings of the victim’s screams, cries for help and then gunshots, which were not easy to listen to," according to the DA's office report.
The unwavering resolution of the justice system in this case brings a somber solace to a community and a family torn apart by a singular act of violence. Brisbon, now incarcerated for life, remains a testament to the consequences of heinous criminal acts against the innocent—a conviction Assistant District Attorney Gina Gilmore, chief in the Trial Bureau, and her colleague Warren pursued with tenacity. "We are thankful to the jurors for their service and their verdict because they were able to do what needed to be done: They gave this victim and her family justice," Warren affirmed in the aftermath of the trial, as per the DA's office report.
