Residents of Cumberland and Grundy counties, mark your calendars for a greener future. In an initiative to tackle household hazardous waste, the Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation (TDEC) is rolling out a mobile collection service this Saturday, Oct. 12. According to an announcement made on the Tennessee Department of Environment's website, locals are called upon to gather those lurking domestic dangers—from ominous cleaning fluids to garden pesticides—and bring them to designated drop-off locations.

TDEC is setting up shop in two locations for your convenience. Find them at the Cumberland County Complex, 1398 Livingston Rd., Crossville, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m., and contact Conrad Welch at (931) 484-9328. Alternately, Grundy County Convenience Center, 97 Vernon Ave., Altamont, will be open from 8 a.m. to noon, with Michael Brady available at (931) 692-3718 for any inquiries.

This service isn't just a one-off gesture but part of a longstanding commitment from 1993. Over 24 million pounds of hazardous domestic waste have been responsibly processed through the program, lightening the toxic load of over 373,000 Tennessee households. The collection service remains free of charge for household waste, ensuring that barriers to responsible disposal are as minimal as the risk when these substances are handled correctly.

There are items you can't offload at this event. Don’t bring ammunition, explosives, alkaline batteries, paint, electronics, or empty containers - they have a different destiny. The costs will apply for businesses and non-household entities looking to discard their hazardous leftovers, with a required appointment in advance—call (615) 643-3170 for a price quote and to schedule this.
