Tykel Wilson, a 22-year-old resident of the District of Columbia, has been dealt a seven-year prison sentence following the armed carjacking of a rideshare driver, as announced by U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves along with Chief Pamela A Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department.
After entering a guilty plea to one count of carjacking and one count of possession of a firearm during a crime of violence on June 28, Wilson received his sentence on Friday from Superior Court Judge Robert Salerno and this sentence not only requires him to serve time behind bars but also be subject to five years of supervised release after his prison term is over. On the afternoon of April 29, 2023, Wilson committed the claimed crime by brandishing a silver firearm and demanded the unnamed rideshare driver, who had just completed a passenger drop-off on Allison Street, NW, to vacate his vehicle—a directive that the driver complied with before Wilson proceeded to make his escape in the stolen car, as per U.S. Attorney's Office.
The conviction and consequential sentencing come after the commendable investigative efforts of the Metropolitan Police Department which were followed up by the prosecutorial acumen of Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kathryn Bartz and Randle Wilson. In a statement issued, U.S. Attorney Graves alongside Chief Smith highlighted the diligence of both the officers involved in the case and the Assistant U.S. Attorneys who led the charge to seek justice for the carjacking incident, according to a recent press release.
