A D.C. resident has been apprehended by police after making multiple false 911 calls claiming incidents of chaos and violence. Angela Herring, 58, was arrested yesterday and is facing several misdemeanor charges related to her alleged series of fake emergency reports.
The Metropolitan Police Department outlined a series of incidents in which Herring allegedly misled law enforcement. On August 30, 2023, she reported an ongoing physical altercation, but officers quickly arrived to find no evidence of a fight. Further false alarms ensued, including a reported chemical threat on November 22, 2023, and a gun scare involving a child on May 10. Each time, responders found no signs of any danger despite her dramatic claims. Following a familiar pattern, Herring's report of a shooting on July 11 was also determined to be unfounded after police investigation.
The repercussions of Herring's false claims reached a turning point when an arrest warrant was issued, leading to charges of Abuse of 911 for falsely reporting a critical incident. According to the timeline provided by MPD's release, her actions diverted emergency resources from actual crises.
Abusing the 911 system has legal consequences and can divert crucial attention and resources from real emergencies. Herring's alleged actions represent a breach of public trust, and authorities highlight the importance of keeping emergency lines open for actual incidents that can be life-threatening.
