Mark your calendars for a day of remembrance and education in Dakota County. This Veterans Day, the Dakota County Historical Society is inviting the community to a special luncheon followed by a historical presentation on the attack of Pearl Harbor. Slated for Saturday, Nov. 9 at 1 p.m., the event will be held at the Sibley Historic Site, as announced by Dakota County official news.
For those desiring to show gratitude to veterans or deepen their understanding of pivotal historical events, admission is tagged at $40 per person. A discounted rate of $35 is available for veterans and members of both the DCHS and the Minnesota Historical Society. Given that seating is limited at the Sibley Historic Site, located at 1357 Sibley Memorial Highway in Mendota, early registration is advised.
The luncheon will pave the way for a program where Frank Sachs, a historian and lecturer, will delve into the cataclysmic event of Japan's surprise attack on the United States during World War II. The Dakota County announcement detailed that Sachs will explore the multi-decadal relationship between the U.S. and Japan leading up to Dec. 7, 1941, crystallizing into what President Franklin D. Roosevelt famously condemned as "A day that will live in infamy." The presentation will unravel the mutual misunderstandings that precipitated the attack and scrutinize its strategic execution and consequential tolls.
Before retiring into his current historian and lecture circuit, Sachs served as an educator. For attendees, his insights promise a blend of academic rigor and the digestibility of a seasoned teacher. Reservations can be made by contacting the Sibley Site at 651-452-1596, although for those seeking convenience, the Dakota County Historical Society's website offers an online reservation service.
