Following the annual call for heightened safety awareness, Dallas Fire Rescue has teamed up with the National Fire Protection Association to celebrate National Fire Prevention Week, running from October 6-12. The focus of this year's initiative, themed “Smoke alarms: Make them work for you!” is to shed light on the life-saving significance of functional smoke alarms in homes. As highlighted by Dallas Fire Rescue, smoke alarms can more than halve the risk of fatalities in home fires, as per the City of Dallas.
Despite the established benefits of smoke alarms, statistics reveal a troubling gap, with 60 percent of fire deaths occurring in residences lacking working alarms. In a proactive effort to close this safety gap, Dallas Fire Rescue has committed to providing free smoke alarms and installation services to homeowners within the city. Renters are also covered under this initiative, with Dallas Fire Rescue set to inform landlords and property managers to provide the necessary equipment. Residents in need of a smoke alarm can reach out by calling 214-670-7016 or dialing the city's helpline at 3-1-1.
The initiative also includes a public Fire Safety Education & Health Fair hosted by Dallas Fire Rescue on October 12. The event, scheduled from 10 a.m. to Noon at the Thurgood Marshall Recreation Center, offers a variety of family-oriented activities, including fire trucks and safety demonstrations. Freebies such as smoke detectors and home safety inspections will be offered alongside entertainment that includes music and food.
