Mayor Mike Johnston has presented a revised budget proposal for Denver's fiscal year 2025, heeding the City Council's feedback amidst a climate of fiscal constraints. Despite facing the leanest financial period in recent years, the mayor's office has expressed a commitment to maintain essential services for Denver's residents. "As we navigate one of the tightest budgets of the last decade and a significant drop in federal funding, I’m committed to working together to deliver a balanced budget that protects the vital city services residents deserve," said Mayor Johnston, as per City and County of Denver.
The updated budget plan injects an additional $7.3 million into various municipal programs, an increase that aims to bolster rental assistance, fortify small business supports, expand youth programs, enforce residential public health inspections, and advocate safer street projects. The administration has attempted, amid economic squeezes, to balance answering the council's calls for more funding and managing available fiscal resources.
In a move that underscores the collaborative spirit between the executive and legislative bodies of Denver's government, the revised budget makes strides toward addressing multiple requests put forth by City Council members without stretching existing reserves too thin. According to Mayor Johnston, as obtained by the City and County of Denver, "Members of City Council have provided thoughtful feedback on the 2025 budget proposal, and we are proud to include millions in additional funding for key programs that will build a more vibrant, more affordable and safer Denver."
Interested parties looking for a detailed breakdown of the revised budget can soon access the updated October budget book. Scheduled to be published online on Monday, Oct. 21, the updated details will reflect the incremental funding commitments and resource allocations proposed. Mayor Johnston's complete letter to the City Council has been made accessible to the public, and the 2025 budget proposal in its entirety is available for review at denvergov.org/budget.
