After a grueling ten months of reconstruction, the Ralph L. Carr Judicial Center in Denver is ready to swing open its doors again to the public on Tuesday, October 8. The office tower was closed after a break-in led to a fire and significant water damage on January 2. According to the Colorado Judicial Branch, the initial phase of reopening will grant visitors access to the first and second floors during regular business hours, Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., while floors 3-7 continue to be under construction.
The unwelcome New Year's incident, which saw a fire set on the seventh floor and sprinklers running for two hours, has led to a challenging period of repairs and cleaning. The damage was not solely contained to the fire's epicenter, every level below was impacted, and the building-wide HVAC system circulated smoke all through the structure. Access to floors higher up in the tight-knit tower, 8-12 to be exact, will be to appointment only, as told by the Colorado Judicial Branch.
Repairs have been comprehensive and are still underway, with water and materials mitigation and some complete floor rebuilds necessitated by the scale of the damage. Industrial hygienic cleaning was a must due to the smoke that was pushed through the building's air system. The ongoing work reflects the depth of devastation wrought that early morning, leaving more than just physical repairs in its wake, but also the imposing task of ensuring the structure once again meets safety and functionality standards for the myriad agencies it serves.
The full completion date for the Ralph L. Carr Judicial Center is optimistically pegged for summer 2025, with a significant portion of the focus placed squarely on making sure to carefully reconstruct floors 3-7. Chief Justice Monica M. Márquez emphasized the importance of the building, stating, “The Ralph L. Carr Judicial Center is an important symbol in our legal community- it is the hub of activity for several agencies critical to our judicial system.” She commended the dedicated team for their tireless work, ensuring “employees can safely return to their workspaces,” as per the Colorado Judicial Branch.
