Residents in Denver and its surrounding suburbs will see their water bills increase slightly in 2025, as announced by Denver Water. The utility, which serves 1.5 million customers, cites the need for maintenance and resiliency of its system, some components of which are over a century old, as the reason for the rate hike. As reported by Denver Water, Denver Water CEO/Manager Alan Salazar emphasized the importance of the water supply's reliability and safety both presently and for future generations, aligning these efforts with the organization's longstanding commitment.
In expressing the dual commitment to service and affordability, Salazar said, "Our lives depend on water, and the mission of Denver Water is to ensure that our customers, 1.5 million people across Denver and surrounding suburbs enjoy safe and reliable water service today and for the future, the system we have today is due to the foresight of Denver Water's past leadership," as obtained by CBS News. The precise increase in monthly bills has yet to be disclosed, but the announced changes reflect Denver Water's responsibility to sustainably manage and preserve the system that delivers this essential resource.
The rate increase follows Denver Water's strategic considerations of the utility's infrastructure and service commitments. This involves investment in treatment plants, maintenance of the watershed, and overall system modernization to address future challenges. The organization has a history of prioritizing foresight in utility management, a practice intended to continue as it navigates the intricacies of water provision in the 21st century.
Emphasizing the reasoning behind the rate adjustment, Denver Water notes both stewardship and customer service as core values guiding the decision, "The system we have today is due to the foresight of Denver Water’s past leadership, in keeping with this legacy, we have a responsibility to be good stewards of this system and the water it provides while keeping rates as low as good service will allow," Salazar said, as per 9News. The efforts to manage a balance between operational excellence and cost efficiency are reflected in the upcoming rate increment designed to lay the groundwork for Denver's water security in the years to come, and customers are being asked to absorb a fraction of the cost associated with said management and improvements.
