Corewell Health's nursing staff, encompassing nearly 9,600 individuals across metro Detroit, is poised for a critical vote to potentially unionize with Teamsters. This ever-growing healthcare provider, which became Michigan's largest following a merger, could witness one of the nation's major unionization movements—the most significant Teamsters effort in half a century. In a climate where labor organization movements are closely monitored, both the healthcare sector and labor activists are keeping a watchful eye on developments.
Nurses involved have detailed their quest for better working conditions, fair wages, and a stronger voice when it comes to healthcare administration. Talking to FOX 2 Detroit, Rebecca Smola, an RN at Corewell Health Dearborn, shared the sentiment, stating, "We thought once we were done with Covid, because of the sacrifice and doing a lot of things that put us and our families at risk, that we’d be more recognized." Smola conveyed that the realization of the need for a union came as conditions seemed to worsen post-pandemic.
This significant step toward unionization follows the submission of cards of interest to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), which gave the green light for a formal vote. Katrina Wallace, a nurse organizing the effort, told CBS News Detroit, "Based on the number of cards we got for union authorization with Teamsters, the percentages are very good." She explained the drive within the context of preserving patient care quality amid insufficient hospital staffing and the threat of malpractice incidents due to nurse exhaustion.
The election is scheduled to span November 12 to 14, according to NLRB spokesperson Kayla Blado, with the regional office in Detroit slated to tally the votes on November 15. Election results, they told the Detroit Free Press, will be public once the count is complete. Nurses from eight Corewell hospital campuses, alongside the Southfield Center, stand eligible to cast their vote, potentially marking a significant shift in employment practices at the health system.
